It's another sign that teams are spending too much.

I think sponsors are leaving or cutting their funds because the fan interest is simply not there anymore – not like it used to be. Putting your name on the hood of a race car doesn't have the selling power it used to have. You can see on television that the stands are about half empty every week now. I've noticed local interest has went down dramatically as well. Practically everyone around here used to carry a racing number on their vehicle and it was a big deal. We had a county-wide fantasy NASCAR group here for several years, and now very few of those people watch it anymore. But yet there are tons of people going to the local dirt tracks on Saturday nights. NASCAR is going to have to get back to its roots somehow. I think that is the only thing that will save the sport, especially now that Jeff Gordon will be retiring. He will take a lot of fans with him when he goes IMO

Racing's core audience won't go away.
As for "getting back to its roots," I hear that from other fans yet they can never really define what that means. I keep hearing "they need more short tracks," except the short tracks aren't good races at the Cup level.
The sport needs more lead changes, more winners, less exclusivity (i.e. no more Goodyear monopoly, let Firestone and Hoosier compete), and a more intelligent economic system.

I would say that the single biggest change that needs to be made is to abolish the chase format points system. Any system where the best driver does not always win is not a good system. It was a bad idea from the start IMO

Yes. Go back to the Latford Point System, increase the bonus for winning the race to 125 - to where the race winner gets 300 points, second 175, etc. - and increase the lap leader bonus to 10 for leading, 80 for most laps led.
