I've been meaning to make a Texas music thread for a while and never made it here.
Texas has had it's own State Music Department for over two decades, it's own Texas Music magazine, many different music scenes and venues and covers a wide range of music.
I'll start with Beyonce's recent Grammy gospel performance. I did include this on the Radio thread a few days ago but it's so amazing it's good to repeat it. It also shows the Texas music goes far beyond country music.

Conspirare performing The Beatitudes from The Sacred Spirit of Russia. Hubby's former choir director is in this group. Conspirare just won a Grammy for best choral performance. I think they've had 8 nominations but this is their first win.

While I'm thinking about church, sometimes the Texas Sky Band performs during the service and at church events at the church we go to now.

Kenny Rogers is a local boy...born and raised in Houston.
Early Kenny
Kenny has had such a long career, there's so much to choose from. Let's go off the well known path to one of my favorites

One of son's high school friends in the studio with one of her original songs. She's such a sweetheart. Always has been. Smart, smart, smart girl...I think she was salutatorian of her and son's graduating class. Trying to remember the number of kids in his class now...600 and some.
Another clip for Ira
She's gotten great reviews in the Houston Music Scene.

Another local girl. Katie won the radio contest at my (now former) favorite country music station. She's from the same suburb we live in but the high school one over from us. She wrote this song when she made the move to Nashville. It was a couple or three years after her first singles since she was 16 and still in school when she got a recording contract.
This was her breakout hit a few years ago

Houston has it's own rap scene. It's not something I follow but I'll include a couple of videos:

I should include a bit about Texas Blues. From the Texas Blues wiki page:
Texas Blues is a subgenre of the blues, and of course is not limited to Texas-based musicians. It has had various style variations but typically has been played with more swing than other blues styles. Texas blues differs from styles such as Chicago blues in use of instruments and sounds, especially the heavy use of the guitar. Musicians such as Stevie Ray Vaughan contributed by using various types of guitar sounds like southern slide guitar and different melodies of blues and jazz. Texas blues also relies on guitar solos or "licks" as bridges in songs.
..and here's Stevie Ray Vaughan performing "Texas Blues" in 1989:
...and a bit of T-Bone Walker

Pulling from Yolanda's wiki page:
Yolanda Yvette Adams (born August 27, 1961) is an American gospel singer, record producer, actress, and radio host on WBLS. As of September 2009, she had sold 4.5 million albums since 1991 in the United States, and nearly 8 million albums worldwide according to SoundScan.[1]
