www.thestarphoenix.com/entertainment/Canadian+country+darling+still+going+strong/7206480/story.htmlCanadian country darling still going strong Terri Clark has had a stunning career in the country music industry. Her self-titled, debut album came out in 1995, hitting platinum in Canada and the U.S.; an electric start to an impressive career that continues to glow. “When I started out, I remember having a conversation with Vince Gill and he told me, if you get three to five really good years out of a music career, that’s actually average and pretty good,” Clark remembers. But she has no plans of slowing down anytime soon: “I see people like George Straight and Reba McEntire who are still doing great after years and years and years, so I’m about half way there!” Clark is nominated for three CCMA Awards this year: female artist of the year, album of the year for Roots and Wings, and the fan’s choice awards. Clark describes her latest album as a more personal album, saying she “poured her heart and soul” into the music. The album includes Smile, a song about her mother, who died of cancer in 2010. She says getting personal with her music is “non-negotiable.” “If I can’t be honest in my art, and craft, and what I do, and express myself as a songwriter, not I’m not only doing myself a huge disservice, but the people who I’m making the music for, essentially. Art has to be honest. I’ve never been one for the contrived route. “It’s difficult, but I feel people are people. I’m every bit the same person as the person in the third row of my show. We’ve all had the same human experiences, and losses, and dark periods, and light periods, and I’m just able to put all of those feelings to music.” As a way to wind down from the deeply personal nature of her last album, Clark is in the midst of recording a new album of classic country covers and duets. She tried to take a sample of country songs from each decade starting in the ‘50s. “I basically chose a bunch of songs by artists who were heavily influential on me when I was learning to play guitar.” Duets include Leavin’ On Your Mind by Patsy Cline, sung with Jan Arden; Golden Ring by George Jones, with Dierks Bently; and she’ll be singing a Reba McEntire song with Reba herself. Other songs on the upcoming album include Swinging Doors by Merle Haggard, Don’t Come Home a Drinkin’ by Loretta Lynn, and Love is a Rose by Neil Young. “I’ve been wanting to do a classics record for five or six years,” she said. “Because I think nostalgia is important to us as human beings, and where were we in our life the first time we heard something. It’s part of the tapestry of who we are and paints a picture of our lives."
