Another story behind the song from Country Music Classics

Many country music hit songs are written as a result of conversations- or some chance remark either made or overheard during a conversation.

“He’ll Have To Go,” one of country music’s true classics, came about as a result of a conversation between writer Joe Allison and his wife Audrey. During a phone conversation between the two of them, Joe was having a hard time understanding what Audrey was saying so he told her to put her mouth a little closer to the phone and talk louder. Audrey did so and they finished their conversation. When Joe arrived home later that evening, he found that Audrey had scribbled the words, “put your sweet lips a little closer to the phone” on a piece of paper. She had changed the word “mouth” to “lips” and rephrased the line.

Joe immediately sat down and finished the idea, which became “He’ll Have To Go.” He put the song on tape and presented it to RCA Records producer Chet Atkins. Chet liked the song and thought it was a hit and he also thought he had just the singer to make the song happen---Jim Reeves. Jim’s RCA Victor single of “He’ll Have To Go” entered the country music charts December 7th, 1959 and made it to number one, where it stuck for 14 weeks. It was Reeves’ 26th charted song and was on the country charts for 34 weeks. The single also scored a # two on the pop music charts.

Jim Reeves visited Oslo on the Nashville Stars Tour in 1964, which also featured Bobby Bare, Chet Atkins and the Anita Kerr Singers.
Much of this tour was recorded, including the now-famous Stockholm concert that lasted over two hours, and a four-CD box-set was
released in 2007, featuring three complete shows from Sweden and Germany. The Oslo, Norway show was, however, left out, despite
NRK having a complete recording that was broadcast on radio both in 1964 and several times later.

Being a Reeves-fan since birth, I have tried for many years to find an official release of this concert. I have yet to find one.
A US bootleg, “The Unforgettable Jim Reeves Live”, is the only record I’ve seen with the songs, but taken from a low quality TV
recording.

This recording that I present here is the original 1964 NRK radio broadcast, as it was repeated by NRK P1 Radio in 2004 for the
40th anniversary, and I was smart enough to record it unto a cassette tape on my father’s old stereo. It features a brief
introduction of the band, the Blue Boys, before Jim hits the stage. He plays some of his biggest Norwegian hits, and is at
the end awarded a silver disc for “Adios Amigo”. It then cuts/fades abruptly.

A persistent rumour is that Jim played more songs afterwards, which is false. As the original TV broadcast shows, he had taken
his bow and was leaving the stage when he was surprised by the silver disc, prompting a brief encore chorus of “Adios Amigo”.

Due to reasons I do not know (either bad tape or the broadcast), the quality decreased for the last few minutes of the show (most
audible during the silver disc part, does not affect the rest of the songs that much).

I've always been a huge fan of Jim Reeves, but I didn't know he had some of his best song's that I had never heard before until I FINALLY played all of his 16 CD box set. I discovered some real jewels on it. It also has really amazed me that he was so much more popular and loved in foreign countries than right here in his own country of the USA. Here's a list of his gold records in 1943. He passed away July 31,1964 at a young age of 41 years.


These are for songs according to Jim Reeves' wife, Mary.

He has been awarded more since he passed away.

I hope I got this all right, but this came from a Jim Ed Brown interview with Jim Reeves' wife, Mary.

I didn't know where to put this, but since Arne Benoni from Norway is a huge Jim Reeves fan I thought this might be a good place.

Arne Benoni covering a medley of Jim Reeves songs. I think he does a great job on them. Jim Reeves has a smoother and softer voice

Here's a video of Arne Benoni singing one of his songs which had been given to Jim Reeves to record but sadly
he died before he got it recorded. I would loved to have heard his version, but it wasn't meant to be. This is from a "live"
Ralph Emery TV show. I love his singing on this.



I am editing this at this late date because I found out that it wasn't this song (the one in this video) , but a song called "The Voice" that was
given to Jim Reeves to record before he sadly got killed in his airplane crash. Sorry for the mix up!

I've gotten where I listen to my Jim Reeves CD's more and more.....almost exclusively. His music is just so pleasing to listen to. I also have a couple of live dvd's I've watched more than a few times lately, also.

I didn't realize Jim Reeves had written as many songs as he did in the short time he was here. It was somewhere around 70 something and he co-wrote quite a few, also. His wife said he loved to write and the melody came to him easy and he was good at it. It was said by some of his fellow artists that he was very intelligent and a perfectionist. He left a lot of songs recorded on tape and his wife had them put on CD's and was released from time to time to where there were some people who thought he was still alive years after he had gotten killed in his airplane crash. Tears still come to my eyes when I think about him being gone and that will be 53 years ago in July. Just so sad.

Jim Reeves...another pride of the great state of Texas!
