I hadn't been on a message board for a long time until I rejoined this one. Do people even do message boards much at all anymore? I find that there area a lot of features on here that I don't know how to use anymore. But I always enjoyed the message board experience back before facebook existed. Which do you prefer, message boards or social media?

I think I'm probably the wrong person to ask since I only do this message board online. : )
I don't do Facebook. I don't do instant messaging. I don't tweet or do twitter. I don't do any of that stuff...whatever it's called.
What I do online is....
.... read my daily comics. I have a subscription from Gocomics that I've had for years and years which delivers them to my email box everyday. It's cheap...like $12 a year or something like that.
.... listen to music on youtube and sometimes GAC's website.
.... read my daily news newsletters and follow links if I find something I want to read more about
.... shop...usually on Amazon but this week I also ordered a bumper sticker for my new car from Cafe Press. I also pre-ordered the next ElfQuest comic book since I got a notice that the current one was shipped to us this week.
..... manage my library account and reading material
..... watch movie trailers online for stuff on Netflix so I can decide whether or not to put it on my list.
..... read the online grocery sale ads (since the mailman only delivers them when they feel like it)
That's about it. This one message board, comics, reading, music, shopping. That's the whole She-bang for me.
How about you Miranda? How do you spend your online time?

Well II used to visit a lot of different sites daily back when I first had the internet. National/world news, racing news, country music news, certain artists I like, CWO. Now I have found that you can get all this stuff in one place on facebook (except for CWO, of course). There area actually very few sites I visit now besides facebook. Except for a local Topix message board and a website for a statewide blogger (mainly to see if he's trashing my newspaper). LOL
I have gotten into internet shopping the past few years though. And also library ebooks, which I showed my mother how to access awhile back.
But sometimes I miss the personal conversations you could have with people on message boards. People comment on stuff on facebook, but mostly on there write a comment and never look at it again on the music and news pages etc.

I like conversation myself. : )
I know Facebook is very popular. I've avoided it because I spent a full decade of my life moving away from a stalker. It's all very ancient history now but I don't want to put my name out there with my day to day activities. Doesn't seem smart.

Hello, great idea for a discussion. I am on Facebook, (not very active all the time), I also have a twitter account. Don't post much on there either. I think I've made like 1 or 2 tweets. I use it mostly to follow artist and see what they are up to. I am on 3 message boards. This one and two others. And after my recent Facebook experience, I do really enjoy the message board. I was on a group on Facebook, and then all of a sudden I'm not anymore. I'm not really sure what I did to get removed. I think I might have said something the admin didn't like/agree with. And boom! I'm removed. So I was debating, do I try to contact the admin and apologizes, and beg to join the group again? Or do I just "take the hint", i'm not wanted there. So far I've decided to go with the latter. I keep thinking over the last few posts I made, and for me they don't qualify as grounds for removal.
Anyway.....I'm going off topic there. But I do really enjoy this message board. And I would hope, that if I post something that was approved or liked, the admin would message me about it first before just removing me.

Tina,
You'd think that if someone was offended, they'd have let you know what it was about so you could talk about it.
Maybe it was something entirely different....like someone hit the wrong button somewhere along the way.

Tina - I agree with Jo. It might have been done unintentionally.
I do belong to Facebook and Twitter but don't use them hardly at all. I don't have a lot of time for message boards, but my first one was CWO because I was looking for a site to learn info about George Strait when I first became a fan. When it closed, Jane told me about this site and I started posting here. I am usually posting while at work.

I've been active on Facebook for 10 years. When I first joined, it was just for college students. It was really only a directory and had next to no features. After they let the general public join it was a great way to catch up people you went to school with, etc. Also to keep up with events of your community and to meet friends of your friends. But I feel like message boards are really better for discussing specific interests. I used to love CWO back in the day. That was my internet addiction before facebook. LOL i set up a Twitter account a long time ago but I never made any tweets and I can't remember how to get into it anymore. I need more than 140 characters to express myself anyway

It's a closed group, I can't even search for it or anything. So there is not much I can do. So thats ok. Gives me more time on here!

Miranda,
I obviously need much more than 140 characters. : )
When I'm ready to post online, I'm ready to post online but when I'm out and about, I usually don't even bother to turn on my cell phone. I carry it with me in case I have car trouble (knock on wood) but I don't worry about being out of touch. I don't even bother to take my phone on my daily walks...why would I when it's just something else to carry?
To me, it sounds stressful to always be tethered instead of the feeling of just being out doing what I'm doing and enjoying it as it goes along. If I was looking at my phone, I'd miss the sky and the people around me.

I hardly ever turn my cell phone on unless I'm going out of town. But the iPad has become an extension of my arm. Mainly because my postings and comments require a full keyboard. I'm not into texting lingo. LOL

Oh no...a meaningful thread...awesome Miranda.
That is the something missing on Facebook...amongst other things.
Such as your privacy...
The governments of the world thank all the facebook users for this wealth of information.
The people of the world will be known to all with retina recognition...it is ready to roll.
When you board a plane...look in here...when you get pulled over...look in here...whatever you do...look in here.
Israel has perfected retina recognition...from facebook photos...especially when they are tagged...thank you very much!
So if one of your facebook friends is a terrorist or wanted for something...please step this way!
Just finished the series "The 100" last night...folks we are headed into strange territory indeed.

On a personal level...
I have no cell phone reception where I live...about a one mile area dead zone.
At first I was pissed...then I realized that I was blessed.
I have seen people actually shaking their device to make em work!
Folks are lost without this stupid technology...yes I said stupid! lol
If I were to write 3 sentences on social media...no one would read it.
If I write 3 words ...no one would care...if I could find the post again.
Then the feeling you get when no one likes your post...then someone gets 1000 likes...
for something stupid!
Like being the last one chosen for a team...
Which reminds me...Miranda...can you get Moshe over here?

So this is how my day goes with social media now a days...
I get up...make some coffee...fire up the computer...and see what you guys have to say.
I may say something...so far I always do...then at work maybe ...maybe check facebook.
Then after a certain time...folks call to talk with my wife...and I go outside.
I have a huge music room where I retreat too...my sanctuary...my world.
I listen to vinyl albums and hand write special letters...and watch reruns that I have missed.
I have my habits...I love yard sales...it is actually hard to pass them up.
Maybe it is the random conversations that you can have with people...maybe the good deals.
Just yesterday afternoon I picked up a strat and amp...never used for 140...last deal of their day.
Best deal of my day...do I need another guitar...well hell yes.
When I learn to play the first one...I wanna be ready to move right along with playing them.
