There was an article in today's Wall Street Journal about Viacom's restructuring. I followed a few more links back to where and how that affected CMT. Here's a link: www.musicrow.com/2015/03/viacom-restructuring-leads-to-cmt-exits/...and I'll copy and paste the article in a sec but my question is, do you think that Viacom placing CMT in with their "family" channels will change their programming? In what ways? Any other thoughts? Here's the article: Viacom Restructuring Leads To CMT Exits Follow MusicRow on Twitter Print This Post Print This Post Sarah Skates • March 31, 2015 • CMT_BLACK_WHITE111Lay offs hit CMT last week as part of the restructuring of parent company Viacom. Craig Shelburne and Chris Parton were among the many staffers who exited CMT’s downtown Nashville headquarters. Shelburne had been with the company since 2002 where he served as senior editor of CMT.com, editor of CMT Edge and producer for Live @ CMT and Concrete Country. He can be reached at cshelburne@msn.com and 615-397-7048. Parton joined the network in 2007 and most recently served as writer/producer for CMT.com and CMTEdge.com. Contact him at partct78@gmail.com or 585-269-9128. According to a CMT representative, “Viacom is making changes in three of our domestic network groups, creating two new organizations. These changes are part of the process of realigning our resources to meet the new needs of the organization.” One division will focus on kids and family, and will be home to CMT, CMT Pure, Nickelodeon and TV Land. The other organization will include MTV, VH1, Comedy Central, Spike, and Logo. Reports from CMT indicate a “focus on more and better original programming that monetizes on all screens,” and “an ambitious and diverse programming slate that includes new original series and returning favorites.” The reorganization also includes the departure of Van Toffler, president of MTV Networks Music & Logo Group (MTV, CMT, VH1), after almost three decades with the company. Last week Ad Age pointed to a state Department of Labor notice that said Viacom will cut 264 employees in New York City. Philippe Dauman is president/CEO of Viacom. According to The Wrap, his 2014 compensation totaled $44.3 million.

CMT and GAC both need to be taken off the air. Neither of them feature enough music to fill a thimble. I haven't watched CMT in years except on the rare occasion they are showing a movie I want to see.

CMT and GAC both need to be taken off the air. Neither of them feature enough music to fill a thimble. I haven't watched CMT in years except on the rare occasion they are showing a movie I want to see. There was a time when I had CMT on all day long but that's been years ago now. Then I switched to GAC and had it on all day long for years but then that changed too. I don't even have cable anymore so I don't get either of them. Miranda, do you think that making CMT more "family friendly" will have any impact on mainstream country music? One of the people let go at CMT this past week was Craig Shelburne and I looked him up. He did this column on CMT.... www.cmtedge.com/CMT edge...but it seems he focused almost entirely on Americana. I wonder if there's a signficance in him losing his job and that link...or if it's something else entirely. Is Americana considered to be "family friendly" programming? Is mainstream country?

When they talk about making CMT more "family friendly," I don't think they are referring to music. I think they mean they want more family-oriented programming like you would find on the Hallmark channel, etc. Apparently that kind of programming is popular because there is a huge glut of these family channels on Dish right now.

I'm not even sure if they have music on CMT anymore Miranda so I'm guessing your right.
I'm not familiar with what's on Dish but I've noticed that Netflix has a lot of family friendly viewing. On the new list recently they'd added the movie "God's Not Dead". We watched it last week...really interesting premise...a college professor gives his philosophy students an easy third of their grade if they simply write "God is Dead" and hand it to him. One Christian student says he can't do that so the professor challenges him to prove that God is alive. I don't want to give away how it goes but it's an interesting debate.
While we were watching it, I googled to see how the movie had done at the box office and it had done well. On a two million budget, it's has a worldwide total of $62 million at the box office. Of course the critics hated it. I guess the official rating is "overwhelmingly disliked" it. There are plans for a sequel.
That kind of low investment profit is especially appealing to tv executives who are losing money ....especially as reality tv shows are fading faster than they anticipated. Family friendly does have an audience base.

CMT only has music really early in the mornings when not much of anyone is out of bed to watch it. And they have the countdown show on Saturday mornings, but they don't even show full videos on that program most of the time. To be honest CMT and GAC were mostly where I listened to music (other than music that I personally purchased) rather than the radio. Once they cut out videos for the most part, that is when I really quit listening to mainstream country other than a select few artists.

I really hope that they show more country shows on country music...instead of reruns...and junk.
The Honey boo boo and other classless representation of country folk is really an insult. Remember the magazine...Country America...the management there were ran off to TNN then they ran to Country Weekly...and have ruined that magazine too.
I wonder if these are the same folks making yet another change...
IMO VH1 has the best playlist of videos...guess that is on the way South also!

To be honest CMT and GAC were mostly where I listened to music (other than music that I personally purchased) rather than the radio. Once they cut out videos for the most part, that is when I really quit listening to mainstream country other than a select few artists. For years it was where I found music too. Since I'm home during the day, I'd have the tv on as I did all my household stuff. I'm sorry to hear they don't even bother with full videos on the countdown show. That's what used to be so great about it. All the best songs in a row. Kinda makes it not about the listener anymore at all doesn't it? In the back of my mind, I still can't shake the idea that all those intercompany transfers that Viacom does....and the people who were hired to work for MTV transferring to CMT is what changed the network. One of the reasons I switched to GAC when I did was because I kept getting the feeling that the folks at CMT didn't really like what country music was or who the audience had long been. And, of course, that's their right to want it to be what they wanted...which was rock and rap because that's where they got hired on and their corporation had all those big name rock stars who could get more exposure and cross airplay and audiences if they just programmed it that way...good for what they wanted, good for the corporation bottom line. Just wasn't good for the mainstream country fans who wanted to hear songs about family, country, faith, farming along with fiddles. But what the heck, that wasn't their problem. They came from rock. Rolling Stone set up shop in Nashville last year. It is what it is.

Seems to me the CMT folks have long been in the business of presenting a mocking version of people. Michael, somewhere recently I read that the new "Nash" section of Country Weekly is a corporate thing connected....shoot, I need to google it again. But my point is that there are very few people in the country music media now who are there because they grew up wanting to work in country music.

Honey Boo Boo was on TLC before it was cancelled due to the mother openly dating a child molester. I think what Michael means is that CMT has similar "reality" shows that promote bad stereotypes about southern/rural people. Like the show Party Down South and numerous others they've had. That's their bread and butter now.

It figures....seems like that's where they were headed for years now.
That's what happens when you put people in charge of programming country who don't like southern/rural people. They'll go for bad stereotypes to validate their own point of view. Give themselves something to laugh at.
Meanwhile, here in the Texas, people have been buying Aaron Watson without mainstream airplay. So just for you CMT, here's some country western culture for you...

The only thing I watch on CMT, other than a movie now and then is the 8 week Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders show. Its just a bit of brain candy. Don't think I would really miss it if it were gone.
