Canadian Country Music Association® to Present Johnny Reid with Humanitarian Award

Also, Johnny Reid has been added to 2011 Canadian Country Music Awards broadcast

(Toronto, ON) June 8, 2011 - The Canadian Country Music Association® is pleased to announce that Johnny Reid is the recipient of the 2011 CCMA Humanitarian Award. Established in 1989, the CCMA Humanitarian Award recognizes outstanding Canadian country artists whose humanitarian contributions have positively enhanced the social fabric of Canada.

The CCMA Humanitarian Award will be presented to Mr. Reid at a private industry event during Country Music Week 2011 to be held in Hamilton, ON September 9-12.

Since the early days of his music career, Reid has been at the forefront of fundraising and social awareness events for organizations such as the World Vision Foundation, Children's Aid Foundation and the Make A Wish Foundation of Canada, among many others. He performs regularly at benefit concerts in support of humanitarian causes and will participate in the upcoming Slave Lake Benefit Concert on June 15th in support of those who lost their homes in last month's wildfires.

"Each year, the CCMA Board of Directors has the opportunity to recognize a person and/or event that has made an outstanding contribution in the support of humanitarian causes," said Ted Ellis, Chair, CCMA Board of Directors. "Johnny is an incredibly talented musician who has made it a priority to better the lives of others. He is a role model for our community and our country - we are very proud to honour him with this year's Humanitarian Award."

"I am both humbled and honoured to receive this award on behalf of all of us who strive to offer hope and love to those who need it the most," said 2011 Humanitarian Award recipient Johnny Reid.

As the reigning Fans' Choice Award winner, Johnny Reid is sure to have everyone on their feet during his live performance at Copps Coliseum, in Hamilton, Ontario on Monday, September 12. Also taking the stage that night are previously announced performers, George Canyon, Terri Clark, Doc Walker, Emerson Drive and Ronnie Dunn. Johnny Reid serenades cancer-stricken fan during St. John's concert

Brenda Lake can't quite find the right words to describe how she felt the moment country star Johnny Reid serenaded her on stage during his St. John's concert, a moment she almost missed.

"I was shocked more than anything. I was in awe," Lake said.

"I went for the concert, went for the meet and greet but I really didn't expect ... everything was just so overwelming."

Lake, a business owner from Fortune, on the Burin Peninsula, is fighting a grim cancer diagnosis.

After years of putting off attending a Johnny Reid concert, she and her daughter decided to take in his show at Mile One Centre on April 3.

She's more than glad she did.

'This is your night'

During a meet and greet prior to the concert, they took photos together and Lake told Reid about her cancer. She had no idea the impression she left on the Scottish-born singer.

After a tiring day, Lake and her daughter went to leave the concert early, when their phones began to ring.

"Everyone was texting us and telephoning us and saying 'you know you have to come back in, Johnny Reid wants to see you,'" Lake told the St. John's Morning Show.

"They said, 'yes he wants you up on stage.'"

Lake and her daughter were led through the center of the stadium and helped on stage.

"Come on let's go. This is your night. This is your night," Reid said as he pulled Lake to the stage, and the crowd erupted in applause.

Video taken from the concert shows Reid with his arm around Lake, his voice cracking as he sings What Love is All About.

"He told me that I have made an impact on his life, that I've made him see different ... see life in a different way," Lake said.

"I'm surprised at that because I didn't say anything out of the ordinary."

Lake said what happened Sunday night also made a big difference in her life.

Cancer-stricken Johnny Reid fan dies, 2 weeks after serenade

A cancer-stricken Johnny Reid fan, whose story made headlines after she was serenaded by the singer during a concert in St. John's, has died.

Brenda Lake, a business owner from the Burin Peninsula, died on Friday. She was 48.

Lake's story made news after she was brought onstage at a Reid concert at Mile One in St. John's on April 3.

She was facing a grim cancer diagnosis at the time, and told the St. John's Morning Show she decided to leave the concert early after a long day.

That's when her phone began to ring.


"Everyone was texting us and telephoning us and saying 'you know you have to come back in, Johnny Reid wants to see you,'" Lake said in April.

Lake had spoken to the singer at a meet-and-greet, but said she had no idea the impression she had left on him.

Reid called her up to the stage, and starting singing What Love is All About as he wrapped his arm around her.

"He told me that I have made an impact on his life, that I've made him see different ... see life in a different way," Lake said in April.

Lake passed away at the Grand Bank Health Centre on Friday.
